Audience Theory

Hypodermic needle model

1) This article links to the hypodermic needle model as it is implying that when people play violent games they are more likely to duplicate what is going on in the game. For example playing these games will increase aggression. This is similar to the hypodermic needle model as it states that the media can inject information into our brains which could be dangerous. This is what the game seems to be doing as it is injecting violent images and increasing aggression which is a negative effect.

2) This links to the hypodermic needle model as it is indicating how the use of violent video games has a negative effect on someone and this is relates back to the model as it says the use of media injects information into our brains. Someone might criticise this front page as it may be seen to inject bad ideas into the audiences head which the hypodermic needle model suggests the media does.

Two-step flow model

1) The two-step flow model says the media isn't the only thing that influences us and social factors also play a role in this. I still think it's relevant as this can affect a person as they know whats right and wrong rather than seeing something in the media and reenacting what they've seen.

2) This YouTube blogger fits into the two-step flow model as he gives his opinions on the game he's playing and the two-step flow model says the two-step flow model instead suggests the audience are influenced by ‘opinion leaders and this YouTube blogger is an opinion leader.

3) This relates to the two-step flow model as the people tweeting influence people opinions as they get their point across meaning people are more inclined to get their point across as well.

4) Jamal Edwards fits into the two-step flow model as he uses the media to get across his views as he's an opinion leader being the owner of SBTV, this means he can get across his views easier as people will be influenced by him and are more likely to do the same.

Uses and Gratifications

1) Diversion - This is why people watch TV to escape from their problems as they find it an alternative from reality as they're trying to escape it. This clip fits in with this as the audience will feel like they're keeping their mind of reality and escaping.

Personal Relationships - Some people use the media as they might develop affection for a character as they've gotten use to seeing them so much they're emotionally attached and this is usually in TV series. Things such as Eastenders are ways for people to attach themselves to a character and are indulged in their life.

Personal Identity - People sometimes see themseleves in the media such as documentaries. Students may seem themselves in things such as 'Educating Yorkshire', this means they'll be watching this as they can relate to things that happen in their school and others.

Surveillance - People also use the media to find out information that's needed such as the news, weather and this is usually done through the news on TV or other media devices.
